Alice Orme Smith

Alice Orme Smith or Normal graduated from University High School in 1907. She received an A. B. from Smith College in 1911. In 1973 she was awarded the Smith Medal for professional achievement. She entered service in May 1917 and was discharged in February 1919. She served in various hospitals in France and came under fire at Bussy le Chateau. She was awarded the Croix de Guerre. She and Charlotte Lois Smith were sisters. She earned master’s degrees from the Armour Institute (Chicago) and the Cambridge (MA) School of Architecture and Landscape Design. She won awards for her designs of the Garden of Religion and the Main Vista of the1939 Worlds Fair (New York). During her career as a landscape architect she designed the grounds of the American Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford, CT. as well as the estates of Joshua Logan, Senator William Benton, and Lawrence Langner. She died in 1980.
